File Rules

File Indexing rules tell Perceptive Enterprise Search which folders and files to index, and what criteria (if any) to apply to particular files and folders. A file rule can instruct Perceptive Enterprise Search to:

The order of the indexing rules is important. Perceptive Enterprise Search will scan the rules top to bottom looking for any rule that is relevant to the current folder. For example, to have Perceptive Enterprise Search index all documents in and under "c:\document", but exclude "c:\documents\archives", your rules must look like:

Adding a File System Indexing Rule

  1. Select File Rules on the index that you wish to add the file indexing rule to. If File Rules is not visible this is most likely due to the index being a "Web Site" index. You cannot add File Rules to a website index.
  2. Click New File Rule. The File Rule Wizard will appear.
  3. In the Document Folder box, type or browse to the physical folder for which this indexing rule applies. Click Next.
  4. Enter the rule definition for the specified folder.
    1. Inclusion Rules
Inclusion rules instruct Perceptive Enterprise Search that some files under this folder should be indexed. The following options apply:
      1. Scope
Include - All files in and under. All files in the given folder and all sub-folders should be considered for indexing.
Include - All files in, but not under. This will include documents in the selected directory, but not in any sub-directories.
Include - All files under but not in. Only files in sub-folders of the given folder should be considered for indexing.
      2. File pattern
The file pattern controls what files Perceptive Enterprise Search will scan in each of the folders included by this rule. This will typically be *.*
      3. File type
The file type option allows you have Perceptive Enterprise Search automatically detect each file's type, or to force it to index a file as the given type.
      4. Document options
The Document options allow you to set extended indexing options. These control how Perceptive Enterprise Search will handle certain characteristics of each document.
      5. Presentation quality
The Presentation quality allows you to control whether or not Perceptive Enterprise Search will convert documents to HTML and preserve style information.
    2. Exclusion Rules
Exclusion rules instruct Perceptive Enterprise Search that some of the files under the folder should not be indexed. The following options apply:
      1. Scope
Exclude - All files in but not under. Only files in the given folder should be excluded from indexing.
Exclude - All files in and under. All files in the given folder and all sub-folders should be excluded from indexing.
Exclude - All files under, but not in. This will bypass any files in any sub-directories of the selected directory. Documents in this directory may be included in the index if there are other rules which apply to them.
      2. File pattern
The file pattern controls what files Perceptive Enterprise Search will exclude in each of the folders included by this rule. This will typically be *.*
  5. Review the information about the new file rule, to make any changes, click Back. To create the new file rule click Finish.
