Metadata

The metadata section shows the metadata items being collated and available for search refinement. This information is generated automatically from the index.

Not all metadata is available for search refinement, Perceptive Enterprise Search will analyze the index to identify the metadata fields that can be used for search refinement. For a metadata field to be considered, it must meet the following requirements:

  1. Fields Occurrences - The field must be present in at least a minimum number of documents, this is defaulted to 65%.
  2. Minimum Values - The field must have at least this number of unique values to be considered, this is defaulted to 5% of the number of documents in the index.
  3. Maximum Values - The field must not exceed this number of unique values to be considered, this is defaulted to 25% of the number of documents in the index.

The metadata list shows the metadata field, the data type and whether the field should be shown in the search refinement.  All auto detected fields are initially set to show.

Perceptive Enterprise Search can perform slightly different tasks depending on the type of the data, the options are:

Adding your own metadata fields

If Perceptive Enterprise Search has not flagged your metadata field for collation, you can manually add it.  To do so:

  1. Select your index from the tree and click the Metadata item.
  2. Click the Add Meta Field button.
  3. Enter the metadata field name exactly as it appears in your documents.
  4. Select whether the field should appear in the search refinement.
  5. Select the type of data contained in the field; see above for details.
  6. Click OK.
  7. You will need to perform an UPDATE of the index to have your changes take effect.
Hiding or showing metadata from search refinement

If Perceptive Enterprise Search has flagged a field for collation that you are not interested in, you can simply turn it off.  To do so:

  1. Select the index from the tree and click the Metadata item.
  2. Find the field you wish to hide/show and click its name.
  3. Change the Show in search refinement option as required.
  4. Click OK.
  5. When you re-execute your search, the field will no longer be shown.
