ContextCogs

Perceptive Enterprise Search’s ContextCogs allow you to pin highly relevant, non-search related snippets for information at the top of the search results. Each time your users execute a search, you ContextCogs get to suggest information that may be relevant to your users. For example, if you search for an individual’s name, you may be looking for their contact details, a ContextCog can retrieve the information from active directory to display to your users.

Perceptive Enterprise Search ships with several ContextCogs out of the box, you just need to add them to your website. The out-of-the-box connectors include:

• Active Directory Contacts – when the search includes a person’s name, the connector will connect to your active directory server to display information about user including email address and phone number.
• Expression Evaluator – attempts to process the search as an expression and output the result. For example, a search for “1024 / 8” will output the answer of “128”.
• Federated Results – this is the most flexible of the context cogs as it allows you to show the first result from one of your indexes, or a federated search engine. For example, you may wish to show the Wikipedia article that matches your search.
• Type Converter – attempts to convert between types of similar measures, for example 1 mile to km.
• Twitter – can search Twitter for #hashtags.
• Facebook – can search Facebook for people.

Your website must be configured to use ContextCogs; you can also specify which cogs should be used per site.

If the Cogs lists above do not suit your needs, you can also create your own ContextCogs using our API. Each ContextCog consists of the following components:

• Provider – the business logic behind the ContextCog, this can be written in script, Java or COM.
• XSLT – XML style-sheet responsible for rendering the output from the ContextCog
• Configuration – Cog specific configuration options
